2 ways to say this, Within England and Australia, depends on who you ask…..
First off "American English" doesn't exist. Neither does "Australian English" (I live in Australia)
There is only English that has been changed into dialects in certain regions,
that includes places in England itself.
Language is ever changing, there is no "Right" there is no "Wrong" in it's verbal form,
only different.
No one is Mispronouncing a word as long as everyone in that region says it that way.
If you are the only one pronouncing a word in a particular way where you live,
That means you do not share their local accent….Like the way I say dichotomy, here in Tasmania
Oh also, EVERYONE has an accent….
I can't help think of Gary Owens doing the "Very Interesting" on Laugh In!
A lot of native English speakers STILL say "nook-yoo-ler" instead of the clearly phonetic "nu-clear." What's THEIR excuse? lol
is the american english and british english are both the same in concept maam?
Just because Americans drop a syllable, when the rest of the English speaking world doesn't, doesn't make it right… So many words get butchered in the US. – 'Axe' instead of 'ask', 'tuh' instead of 'to', 'wanna' instead of 'want to' are a few examples. Because a pronunciation is common certainly doesn't make it 'right'.
I want learn and is My happy inglés
Thank you, teacher Raachelis.
The lecture is easy to understand and very useful.
…uhhh "furgit" c'mon teach!
Excellent Teacher
A question just occurred to me. Do we pronounce "temperature" more like "temprachur" or "temperchur?" I think I'm prone to use the second version.
Fa ma lee….famly….family….. fam who gives a damn, if I can understand you then you're RIGHT!😩
thank god this is not on the citizenship test 🙂
Great! I've been saying it right. I feel my main problem is grammar, but I'm really satisfied with my pronunciation.
Honestly, from the five words you picked as perfect examples of mispronounced terms, I only failed to realize I could shorten family without any issues. The rest were too difficult to pronounce them the long way with that extra syllable. My best guess would be that my high school teachers never incited us to pick the long forms ever. Thus, we didn't copy a lot of bad habits most people copy elsewhere in my home country.
You have that particular touch (dexterity) of yours in breaking down American pronunciation ! Thanks a bunch, Rachel! You cannot imagine how much you've been helpful and useful… I appreciate. Shalom
Don't gorget the swear words.
Makes me want to stress these forgotten syllables
LOL!!! I thought I was just being lazy and southern when I say, "FAM-lee". This is all very interesting. I'm halfway through the video.
Is it pretty common to use the more syllable version of a word in specific circumstances? I realized as you were going through them, that I use the both versions but in specific phrases.
Thank you Rachel
